I've been messing around and trying to learn web design and frontend or full stack development. The current site idea I'm toying with is a video hosting site like vimeo or youtube. Here's my thoughts on it so far:
Basics/Ads/Admin/Technical
- Modern accessible layout
- Basic front page w/ new uploads from people you follow and weekly trending videos
- Visible like/dislike buttons and ratio
- Simple "you might like" sidebar algorithm (same tags as the video you're watching * like/dislike ratio)
- FUNCTIONING DISLIKE BUTTON ON COMMENTS (a la reddit's karma system)
- Limited ads (simple sidebar ad + in video banner ad. No ad videos)
User Experience
- Simple account creation - just email, username, and password with the option to add a banner, pfp, and 2fa
- Minimal data collected - third party cookies will be used to show ads but not to recommend videos or profiles, email only used for opt-in notifications + emergency maintenance notices, cookies only given out to remember the user
- Simple upload process similar to YouTube's (description, title, language, add captions, add tags, mark not for kids and all copyrighted content is owned by the uploader or used under fair use)
- Ability to follow and favorite other users to see their videos on the main page
Legal
- DMCA: A video can be copyright claimed if it uses copyrighted content by the copyright holder. A human must look at a claimed video to verify that a) the content violates fair use and b) is claimed by the copyright holder. If the content violates fair use the video will be taken down and a warning sent to the uploader. 4 warnings and the account is deleted. If the content does not violate fair use the video remains up. If the content is claimed by someone other than the copyright holder, the claiming party has their account deleted.
- COPPA: Terms of service state that accounts can only be created by people 13+ in accordance with COPPA. Users must state that any children featured in their videos wanted to be in those videos with parent's permission and that the videos production did not violate child labor laws.
I'm still very much a beginner when it comes to making these kinds of things, but I feel strongly enough about what I do and don't like about sites like Vimeo, NND, and YT that once I fully know how to build a site like this I know I can pull it off. If anyone has any other ideas or concerns, feel free to comment them!
